The area among
Bari, Brindisi and Taranto provinces, including the town of
Martina Franca, Locorotondo, Cisternino,
Alberobello, Noci,
Putignano e Castellana, has a unique wonderful landscape
. In this green "Itria valley", dotted by vineyards and olive groves, the Fasano
wood with pine trees and oaks, are spread all over
the typical trulli, sometimes alone in the countryside, sometimes grouped
, with their whitewashed walls, their brown cone-shaped roofs
on which pinnacles and magic or christian symbols have been anciently painted.
Alberobello, the "Capital of Trulli",
with its 2 main quarters- the Monti and the Aia Piccola ,
is the most representative and picturesque example of the trullo culture
: only here you may find all the trulli built and grouped together forming a real town
. The Trulli are the most unique architectural experience in the world
: built with dry stones by skilled specialized masters are composed
either of just one room or various ones. Internally made of dry stones,
outside of white washed painted stones on top of which cone-shaped roofs made of "grey chiancarelle"
each one put on the other ones in order to balance the whole and reach the top with just a few numbers.
