Alberobello,
whose name comes from "Sylva Arboris Belli" (the wood of the
war tree), an oak trees wood once upon a time covering the whole area.
Alberobello is believed to have been founded in the 15th cent. by
Acquaviva-D'Aragona family, counts of Conversano.
Alberobello has been realized as a town only as from
1635 thanks to the "Guercio" (or the "Guelfo") of Puglia,
count Giangirolamo II Acquaviva Orsini Del Balzo D'Aragona.
All around the cennter of Alberobello are the characteristic
quarters made of Trulli,
per i quali, Alberobello è famosa in tutto il mondo.
The
monumental area is made of the "rioni"-quarters
"Monti" and "Aia Piccola", composed only of trulli, lined on narrow
steep little roads. Walking along this labyrinth the inside structure of each trullo can be seen from the open doors; on request
the owners or souvenir shops managers will gradly allow you to go inside. The trulli are generally made of a main lobby connected by arches to
the kitchen and other small rooms.
